The QAS, as an organisation, has reassessed its commitment to community engagement and has been working on ways that we can better assist Queenslanders. This renewed focus has seen the Academy pursue new opportunities and develop strong partnerships with specific organisations.
In the last two years the Queensland Academy of Sport has built up a great relationship with Ronald McDonald House charities, in particular the South East Queensland division.
This partnership is one that continues to thrive and we’re excited about the almost endless possibilities that will see both RMHSEQ and QAS benefit in many ways.
QAS Personal Development Advisor Adam Woolnough has been the driving force behind the development of this partnership, working closely with the Ronald McDonald House charity and the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital Foundation.
These organisations give athletes supported by the QAS an opportunity to engage with the community, away from the sporting arena.
The partnership has allowed the QAS to organise regular visits to the Lady Cilento Hospital wards and Ronald McDonald Houses for a number of athletes and squads, which not only provides a pleasant distraction for patients and families patients, but also a new perspective and, a sometimes humbling experience for the athletes.
In February this year, the QAS presented the Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland team with a car load full of donations from their ‘Wish List’ of essentials. These items, including baby items, nappies, canned food, cereals, dry pantry ingredients, sauces and spreads, spices and toiletries, will go a long way to assist families who are visiting RMH houses in the SEQ region. A big thank you to all of the staff who donated as well as some select athletes and their families. Check out the handover video via the QAS Facebook page.
This month, the QAS hosted a Ronald McDonald House Networking Morning Tea. This gathering of RMHC supporters, partners and stakeholders at the Academy was another demonstration of the close partnership shared between our organisations.
The guests were in awe of the services and facilities provided by the QAS after being taken on a guided tour of the venue by QAS Executive Director, Bennett King. The tour featured demonstrations in the QAS gym and sport science lab by staff and athletes, leaving a lasting impression on the attendees. We’re sure they have a higher appreciation for what elite athletes go through to achieve their dreams!
We look forward to working with RMHC on future events, visits and opportunities that will see this partnership continue to grow for many years to come.
