Impressive results from Rowing World Championships

6 October 2017

Australia had a very successful week of racing at the recent 2017 World Rowing Championships in Sarasota, Florida. Returning home with three gold, two silver and one bronze medal, the Australian team placed third on the medal tally behind rowing powerhouses, Italy and New Zealand.

The competition saw Queenslander, Darcy Wruck, compete at his first senior World Championship event as part of the men’s coxed pair. Following a first place finish in their heat, the duo made Australia’s first podium appearance of the competition and earnt themselves a silver medal.

Amy James will also be bringing home a silver medal in the lightweight women’s quadruple scull having finished behind the Italians in both their heat and final.

Placing second in both the heat and semi-final of the women’s double scull, Queensland’s Madeleine Edmunds and her SASI counterpart, Olympia Aldersey, were confident going into the deciding race. Drawn in lane 4, the duo positioned themselves nicely in the first half until breaking away in pursuit of New Zealand and the U.S.A. The front runners proved too strong for our home brew champions, finishing the race as World Championship bronze medallists.

Queensland rower, Hamish Parry, was part of the men’s lightweight quadruple scull who made it into the semi-final, but unfortunately missed securing a spot amongst the six finalists.

Under 23 World Championship silver medallist, Caitlin Cronin, was no stranger to the women’s quadruple scull final in Sarasota. Following a second place finish in their heat, the girls progressed to the final but fell short of standing on the dais.

While Darcy Wruck prepares for next month’s Australian Indoor Rowing Championships, the rest of our rowers will now be immersing themselves in training and use their recent performances as motivation for next season.
