Frequently asked questions

Is there a target age group for school visits?

The program promotes healthy, active lifestyles and is targeted towards primary school students.

How many schools will be visited?

There is no set limit. Over 70 athletes have volunteered for the program and we will work to accommodate as many requests as possible.

Is there a cost to our school?

No. All costs associated with the program are covered by the Queensland Academy of Sport.

When do nominations open?

Nominations will be open from Monday 29 May 2017 to Friday 30 June 2017.

Our school is located in a remote community, can we still apply?

Absolutely. The program aims to reach as many schools as possible. 

How do I nominate my school?

With the support of your principal, complete the online nomination making sure to include a key contact officer and your visit preferences. 

Can we request a specific date and time?

School visits will be scheduled from August 2017 to March 2018. The date of the athlete visit will be determined by your school location. You will be able to nominate a preferred time within the allocated date range for your area.

Can the athlete speak at our school assembly?

Athletes are trained to deliver presentations at school assemblies, in classrooms and sports classes to inspire school children to pursue a healthy and active lifestyle, and build excitement in the lead up to the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Is it possible to request a specific athlete, sport, gender or background?

We will discuss specific athlete requests when we contact you regarding your school’s nomination. We will strive to meet your school’s preferences however due to competition and training schedules we cannot guarantee that the athlete you request will be available.

We are committed to equality and inclusion. We will work with schools to provide visits by male and female athletes and para-athletes from diverse cultures and backgrounds.

One of our former students is a Queensland Academy of Sport athlete. Is it possible for them to attend?

We will make every effort to partner current athletes with their home schools. We will discuss specific requests when we contact you regarding your nomination.

How will I know if my school is selected?

Scheduling of school visits will commence in July 2017. You will receive confirmation from us in August 2017.

If my school is selected, how will the visit be coordinated?

We will work with your nominated contact officer to schedule visits based on your nominated preferences.

Are the athletes screened before a school visit?

All athletes have signed a Code of Conduct that sets out rules for behaviour. All visiting athletes have a current Working with Children Check - Blue Cards.
