The Queensland Academy of Sport is an initiative of the Queensland Government, and is currently under the portfolio of the Minister for National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing, the Honourable Mr Steven Dickson MP.

The Government plays a crucial role in the funding and day-to-day operational tasks associated with running the Academy. A Board of former elite athletes and leaders in the Queensland sporting and business communities are responsible to the Minister for National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing for developing QAS policy and overseeing the overall direction of the Academy.
