QAS Board

The QAS Board is responsible to the Minister for Housing and Public Works and Minister for Sport, the Honourable Mr Michael (Mick) de Brenni MP, for developing QAS policy and overseeing the overall direction of the Academy. The Board includes a number of former elite athletes and leaders in the Queensland sporting community.

Bronwyn Thompson B Phty - QAS Board Chair

  • Former Director Athletics Australia
  • Former Chair of Athletes Commission for Athletics Australia
  • Three time Olympian (2000, 2004, 2008)
  • Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist 2006
  • Commonwealth Record, Long Jump.

Ray Epstein OAM - QAS Board Deputy Chair

  • QAS Board Member since 2008 and Deputy Chair since 2017
  • Chief Executive Officer of Queensland’s peak para-sport organisation, Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association, from 1998-2016
  • Chartered Accountant since 1985
  • Represented Australia in para-powerlifting 1982-1995 including the Seoul and Barcelona Paralympic Games (Australian Paralympic Team Captain for the Barcelona Games)
  • AIS and QAS Scholarship holder during competition career
  • Australian Paralympic Committee Head Coach for para-powerlifting form 2003-2013

Naomi McCarthy OAM, BSc

  • Australian Women's Water Polo team member from 1994 through to 2004
  • Olympic gold medalist Sydney 2000
  • Representation at two Olympic Games in Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004, four World Championships and Four World Cups
  • 2001 named in top ten QAS athletes of the decade
  • AIS and QAS scholarship holder throughout career
  • Director of Womensport Queensland 2006 to 2010
  • Bachelor of Science
  • Held a variety of positions around project and event management.

AnneMarie White OAM

  • Principal AnneMarie White Consultants
  • Board Member for Education Queensland Sport Foundation, Womensport Queensland (Founding and Life member), Smith Family, Gymnastics Queensland and Zonta – Brisbane Breakfast Metro (President), Females in Training ACT, Ministerial Advisory on Women and Girls in Sport
  • Media Manager at International Events including Olympics; Paralympics; Commonwealth and Asian Games; World Championships
  • Published author: Women Who Win (2002), Telling it Like it is (2009) and was a contributing author to Olympic Gold (2012)
  • Has over 28 years extensive experience in  broadcasting, media and communications, event management and networking
  • Churchill Fellowship researching role modelling for women and girls in sport through media coverage
  • Personal interests include sport, travel, family activities, painting and writing.
