Queenslands elite sailors win National Championship

17 February 2015

The 2015 Australian 470 Olympic Sailing Nationals were held at the Southport Yacht Club on the Gold Coast from 11 – 15 February 2015.

Queensland’s World Champions Mathew Belcher and Will Ryan won their third consecutive 470 National Title after winning all but one race throughout the regatta.

After spending a majority of time competing internationally throughout the year, it was the win at his home club which resonated well with the six-time World Champion and Olympic gold medallist, Mat Belcher.

"It’s been really nice to be back and competing at my home club," he said.

"It’s been great to be here sailing in the nationals and to showcase the Southport Yacht Club. This was the first time I have raced at my home club in nearly a decade.

"The conditions were great and we got some big waves, typical conditions to what we will expect in the outer courses at the Rio Olympics next year."

After competing against up and coming local talent, the World Champion and his crew member, Will Ryan, will take some time to train on the Gold Coast over the next few months. They then intend to head across to Europe in April for more international competition.

In the Women’s 470, the national title went to Queensland’s Sasha Ryan with her Tasmanian crew member, Amelia Catt.
