2017 UCI Road World Championships

26 September 2017

Queenslander Katrin Garfoot has cemented her name in the history books after becoming the second Australian to win two medals in the same year in the Time Trial and Road Race at the 2017 UCI Road World Championships in Norway.

The week began with the Time Trial where Katrin claimed a bronze medal, replicating her performance from the 2016 Championships. This feat sees her become the first Australian to win two medals in the history of the event.

To continue her record breaking championships, Katrin lined up for the Road Race alongside teammates Shara Gollow (QLD), Gracie Elvin (ACT), Chloe Hosking (ACT), Rachel Neylan (NSW), Sarah Roy (NSW) and Amanda Spratt (NSW).

Throughout the entire race, the Australian team was able to cover every major move. After many small breakaways, the field kept regrouping before a major attack was made on the final hill. Katrin put herself in a good position amongst this group, which contained one Polish, and six Dutch riders.

With the Dutch having strength in numbers, the odds were stacked against Katrin. Covering the groups every move, she timed her final sprint to perfection and stormed home to claim the silver medal behind Chantal Blaack (Netherlands) and ahead of Amalie Dideriksen (Denmark).

In addition to Katrin Garfoot’s history making feats, young Queenslander Sebastian Berwick claimed 10th in the U19 Men’s Time Trial after winning a bronze medal at the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games earlier in the year.

Queenslanders in action: Sebastian Berwick, Katrin Garfoot, Shara Gillow and Jay McCarthy.
