First Australian athletes announced for GC2018

20 December 2017

The first athletes to be confirmed as members of Australia’s Commonwealth Games team have been announced! Queensland trio; Matt Hauser, Luke Willian and Gillian Backhouse will be joining the automatically selected, Ashleigh Gentle, in representing Australia in triathlon on day one of the Games.

The selection of the Queensland quartet left only two positions available for Jake Birtwhistle from Tasmania and New South Wales’, Charlotte McShane.

Gentle earnt early selection following her second place finish to New Zealand’s Andrea Hewitt in the World Series Sprint Race on the Gold Coast in April.

Unlike her Queensland counterparts who will be making their Commonwealth Games debut, Gentle will be looking to better her result from the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow which saw her finish ninth.

Meanwhile, Hauser, Willian and Backhouse will each be riding an upswing into next year’s Commonwealth Games following an outstanding international season which served as rationale for their selection.

Another 470+ athletes will be confirmed over the coming months as members of Australia’s largest Commonwealth Games team in the nation’s history. Watch this space!
