First GC2018 athletics team members announced

The first 14 track and field athletes selected as part of Australia’s GC2018 athletics team have been announced with two Queenslander’s, Michael Shelley and Patrick Tiernan, named.

Having claimed the top podium position in the marathon at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Michael Shelley is determined to replicate this unforgettable performance in front of a home crowd on the Gold Coast.

“It’s such a special event here on the beautiful Gold Coast which I am lucky to call home, the event is huge!” he told GC2018.

While Shelley will be competing in his third Commonwealth Games, Toowoomba local, Patrick Tiernan will be making his Commonwealth Games debut in the men’s 10,000m.

However, Tiernan is no stranger to the pressure of competing on the international stage having recently placed 11th in the 5,000m and 22nd in the 10,000m event at the 2017 World Championships in London, 13th in the 10,000m race at the World Cross-Country Championships and 20th in the 5000m at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The remainder of the Australian athletics team will be announced in February, with the number of athletes set to total 111.
