Queensland Weightlifters selected for GC2018

25 January 2018

Earlier this week, Commonwealth Games Australia announced the 16 athletes selected to represent Australia in weightlifting at this year’s Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

The team comprises of five Queensland athletes, including two veteran weightlifters and Commonwealth Games medallists, Damon Kelly and Deborah Acason.

As two of Australia’s most decorated weightlifters, both Kelly and Acason will be making their fourth and fifth consecutive Commonwealth Games appearances. Their experience and prior medal-winning performances on the international stage puts them well and truly in medal contention and prime positioning to lead the team’s debuting athletes.

Tia-Clair Toomey, Alyce Stephenson and Brandon Wakeling are among the weightlifting team’s debutants hoping to follow in the footsteps of their experienced team mates.

Like many weightlifters, Toomey and Stephenson were introduced to the sport of weightlifting through CrossFit. This training helped forge a love of lifting and a physical prowess matched only by champions.

You can see the weightlifters in action at the Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre from Thursday 5th April to Monday 9th April.
