Joseph Deng breaks 50-year-old Australian 800m record

23 July 2018

QAS supported athlete, Joseph Deng creates history in Monaco by breaking the Australian 800m record.

Deng’s record time of 1:44.21 saw him cross the line seventh in what was a record breaking race at the Herculis Diamond League meet. Seven athletes hit personal bests along with three national records. Winner, Amos, set a world leading time and meet record with a 1:42.14.

At just 20 years old, Deng’s had a remarkable season so far. His time took 0.19s off the long standing Australian record for nearly 50 years, first set by Ralph Doubell in 1968 at the Olympic Games. Doubell’s time was then equalled by Alex Rowe in Monaco in 2014. Not only did Joseph’s blistering time in Monaco set the new national record, he also set the Oceania record too.

The QAS would like to congratulate Joseph and wish him all the best for the remainder of the season!
