The Queensland Blades secure a 10th men's title in a record-breaking win at the AHL Finals

It was an all Queensland and New South Wales final for both the men and women’s team, a match all were eager to win as it goes down in history as the last ever Australian Hockey League (AHL) title.

The thriller gold medal matches went ahead in front of 1,100 hockey fans filling out the Gold Coast Hockey Centre on Sunday afternoon.

The Queensland Scorchers and NSW Arrows took to the court first. The Arrows lead the way and the Scorches fate looked to be set until the 55th minute whilst behind 7-3, they secured a field goal via deflection. The comeback for the Scorchers wasn’t enough and the Arrows maintained their possession claiming a 7-6 victory and clinching the 2018 AHL title.

It was an entertaining final between the Queensland Blades and the NSW Waratahs. The Queenslanders took an early lead in the game but the Waratahs responded and at the 47th minute it was a close 4-3 to the hosts. In the remaining 10 minutes, Dylan Wotherspoon scored his third and final goal of the game, NSW swatted away his conversion to keep them in close contention. The Queensland Blades showed their resilience with the final score 5-3 winning the last ever AHL title. It was a record-breaking win as they earned their 10th men’s title.

The Hockey Australia Gala followed the conclusion of the final’s. The awards night was held at the QT Gold Coast Ballroom, a cocktail event to award individuals in the AHL Finals, Hockey’s top officials and recognise athletes milestones and retirements.

Mark Knowles, who retired after captioning the Australia to the Commonwealth Games gold medal victory in April was deservingly crowned the Kookaburras’ top play for 2017.
