Queensland Thunder 2019 AWL champions

7 May 2019

Competing in their first season as the Queensland Thunder, they were in for a fairy tale ending that they couldn’t have scripted themselves.

Their AWL season kicked off with a gruelling nine back-to-back matches, really putting the newly formed team to the test. Rising to the challenge the women’s Thunder team won the first 12 matches they played which lead them into the eighth round where they lost two away games to the Fremantle Marlins.

Having won their prelim and semi-finals, Thunder faced up in the gold medal decider against the Marlins for one last time. They rose to the occasion after a shaky start to the match and defeated the Marlins by 10 – 9 to claim the 2019 title and be crowned champions.

Thunder Captain and QAS supported, Bronwen Knox, spoke about the season with Water Polo Australia. “It’s been an awesome season. We’ve come from behind we’ve led from the front; we’ve won from penalty shoot-outs; we’ve lost from penalty shoot-outs and it’s been a fantastic season, it’s had it all,” she said.
