The Physical Performance Unit (PPU) provides strength and conditioning (S&C) to athletes at the QAS and forms one of the cornerstone QAS support services. Incorporating eight full time coaches, the PPU provides specialist services in planning, monitoring and the delivery of individualised training programs.

All coaches are university graduates and are accredited with the Australian Strength and Conditioning Association (ASCA) which is the peak national body for S&C professionals in Australia. Additionally, each coach is required to be accredited with the ASCA Professional Coach Accreditation Scheme (PCAS) which is the gold standard for S&C employment in Australia with respect to recognising coaching experience and education. This ensures that all QAS S&C coaches hold the highest standard and provides quality assurance to the organisation and the athletes they work with.

Specifically, QAS S&C coaches provide services in the areas of speed, agility, endurance, strength, flexibility, injury prevention, management and rehabilitation. Thorough understanding of periodisation and the needs analysis of international competitions result in programs that not only maximise long-term athlete development, but also prepare athletes for the rigors associated with national and international demands. This work is part of an integrated and inter-disciplinary approach in consultation with the head coach, sport scientists, sport medicine practitioners and personal development advisors.

Athletes training at the QAS gym have access to the latest technology and training modalities to provide a platform with the aim of maximising the development of their physical capacities. The gym is well-equipped and contains specialist strength training and cardiovascular equipment. In particular, equipment such as an Anti-gravity (Alter-G) treadmill, force plates (power and force monitoring), EliteForm system (on-line strength planner with an integrated velocity and power monitoring system) and delayed video feedback systems give those athletes who train at the QAS a unique edge to their training programs.
