Breaking Barriers: QAS Empowering Women in High Performance Coaching

02 November 2023

There has been an incredible volume of work undertaken to understand the challenges of encouraging more women into high performance coaching. The AIS Coach Development Team has been at the forefront of these efforts and has established a proactive plan to make a tangible difference in this area.

The Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) is proud to be a part of this positive shift. Over the past two years, we've introduced several initiatives aimed at fostering greater involvement of women in coaching. We're particularly excited about our #Gen2032 Coach Program, a partnership with AIS and respective Sports, which has seen 12 exceptional women coaches (accounting for 52% of participants) engage in a two-year, full-time program.

Moreover, we've kick-started two coach communities of practice focusing on action/acrobatic sports and Paralympic sports, in addition to regional coach workshops. We're thrilled to witness strong engagement from women coaches in these initiatives. Currently, there are 25 women coaches in Queensland working with athletes in QAS supported sports.

Within the broader QAS team, women constitute 53% of the workforce, with representation across all areas and levels of the business. This development is encouraging, yet we recognise that there's still a substantial amount of work to be done. Many women have left coaching, or have not taken up the opportunity for various reasons, but the tide is turning.

We hope that these changes will open doors for new and returning women coaches, enabling them to shape current and future generations of athletes. If you know a female coach who is passionate about working in high performance sports and is interested in joining us on the journey towards 2032 to inspire extraordinary sporting success, please reach out and send us a DM for more information.
