Queensland's action sports athletes are looking strong after competing in the first of two Olympic qualifying events beginning in Shanghai. They join other successful QAS-supported athletes across discus, formula kite, surfing and diving.

International competition results:

BMX Freestyle Park Olympic Qualifying Series, Shanghai, China

Olympic Gold Medallist Logan Martin has claimed a podium finish in the first ever Olympic Qualifying event for Freestyle Park BMX. The 30-year-old finished second after sliding out on one of his tricks.

In the women’s qualifying event Natalya Diehm finished ninth.

The team will head to Budapest in June for final Olympic qualification.

Women’s Park Skateboarding Olympic Qualifying Series, Shanghai, China

14-year-old Arisa Trew has blitzed her competition to win the Women’s Park Skateboard event over reigning Olympic champion Yosozumi Sakuri. Fellow Aussie Ruby Trew finished eighth.

Men’s Park Skateboarding Olympic Qualifying Series, Shanghai, China

Defending Olympic Champion Keegan Palmer has claimed second in the Men’s Park Skateboarding qualifier. He finished ahead of fellow QAS supported athlete Kieran Woolley in fourth. Woolley has been working closely with his QAS support crew to manage his injuries over the last 18 months, helping him get back to podium level.

Women’s Street Skateboarding Olympic Qualifying Series, Shanghai, China

Gold Coast teenager Chloe Covell has claimed eighth place in the final at Shanghai. She heads into the Budapest qualifying event ranked fourth overall.

Athletics, Marrakech, Morocco

Discus thrower Matt Denny has put his Olympic rivals on notice throwing 67.74 metres in Marrakech overnight. The 27-year-old claimed back-to-back Diamond League silver medals.

Formula Kite, Hyeres, France

Townsville’s Breiana Whitehead has placed fifth at the Formula Kite World Championships in Hyeres. It puts the 23-year-old in a strong position for the Paris Olympics after finishing behind three French athletes, with only one athlete per nation allowed to qualify. Whitehead is the first-ever Australian to qualify for kite foil sailing at the Olympics.

Diving

QAS-supported diver Maddi Keeney has been selected to represent Australia at the Paris Olympics in the Synchronised 3 metre diving team alongside Anabelle Smith. The pair’s selection comes a week after they won an Olympic Test event in Paris and claimed silver at the World Championships earlier this year.

Surfing, Narrabeen, Australia

Coolum surfer Isabella Nichols has won the World Surf League’s Sydney Surf Pro Challenger Series at Narrabeen. The 26-year-old defended her 2023 win in the final against friend Erin Brooks. The result comes after a tough run at the Bonsoy Gold Coast Pro two weeks ago where Nichols was knocked out in the semifinals.
