Paris Paralympics 2024 Results: Day 6

04 September 2024

It was a successful night in the pool on Day 6 of the Paris Paralympics with another medal and a broken record. Plus Queenslanders posted strong results in Para Shooting and Para Archery, and fought hard in the Wheelchair Basketball Quarter Finals.

Para Swimming

Rachael Watson has won a Bronze Medal in the Women’s S3 100m Freestyle Final in time of 1:38.92. The QAS-supported swimmer also set a new Oceania Record in her heat, touching the wall in 1:37.84. The three-time Paralympian will now focus on the Women’s S4 50m Freestyle event which she has won Gold in at the previous two Paralympic Games.

Five-time Paralympian Brenden Hall has finished 6th in the Men’s S9 100m Backstroke Final. The QAS-supported swimmer is now preparing for the Men’s S9 100m Butterfly, after earlier winning a Bronze Medal in the Men’s S9 400m Freestyle.

Poppy Wilson has missed out on a medal in the Women’s S10 100m Butterfly Final. The QAS-supported swimmer placed fifth, touching the wall in a time of 1:07.52. Poppy will now focus her attention on the Women’s S10 400m Freestyle event.

Wheelchair Basketball

The Australian Rollers Men's Wheelchair Basketball team has suffered another agonising loss in their Quarter Final match, going down 84-64 to the undefeated Great Britain. The Rollers were off to a strong start only trailing by one point at quarter time, 3 points at half-time, and 5 points at the final change. Four-time Paralympian Bill Latham added 20 points to the scoreboard, fellow QAS-supported player Eithen Leard added 8 points, helped by QAS-supported teammate Sam White. The Rollers will now play Spain again tonight at 6.30pm AEST.

Para Shooting

Para-Shooter Natalie Smith has equalled her best Paralympic result in the Women’s SH1 R8 50m Rifle 3 Positions competition, making the Final and finishing 8th overall. The 49-year-old had a strong start and was placed third after 15 shots but was later eliminated in the high-stakes shootout to decide the medal placings. The Queenslander said she was happy to equal her PB but felt like she had more left in her.

Para Archery

Amanda Jennings has bowed out of the 1/8 Elimination Round of the Women’s Individual Recurve Open. The 52-year-old went down 6-0 to Italian world record holder Elisabetta Mijno. The QAS-supported Archer had earlier defeated Indonesia’s Wahyu Retno Wulandari 7-3 in the 1/16 Elimination Round. Afterwards, the Silver Paralympic medallist for Para Canoe said she was pleased with her result considering she only took up the sport after the Tokyo Paralympics. Amanda will now focus her attention on the Mixed Team Recurve Open event on Thursday alongside Taymon Kenton-Smith.
